The Ayurveda Diet is designed for specific body types. Actually, Ayurveda isn’t a “diet” per se, but it includes a way to help you to acquire a healthy relationship with food (without restrictions) that features weight-loss as a mere by-product. Ayurveda can better be described as a way of life. Ayurvedic healing includes herbs, nutrition, panchakarma cleansing, acupressure massage, Yoga, Sanskrit, and Jyotish (Vedic astrology) .
Ayurveda nutritional philosophy has its origins in Indian philosophy, which stipulates that harmony and balance in the body is achieved through the proper food combinations. For instance, if you eat too much salty food, your body becomes imbalanced and weight-gain or other illness may result. The perfect meal to achieve optimal health would combine six types of food—sweet, salty, sour, bitter, pungent, and astringent. Variety is the spice of life, after all. Here’s where it gets really interesting: there are three types of life forces in the body that tell your body how you should be eating—vata, pitta, and kapha. While each of us has a little bit of each life force in their body, one force usually reigns supreme. Depending on if you’re ruled by vata, pitta, or kapha, you can adjust your diet to suit your needs.
Folks with a pita body type are very strong-willed and determined. These passionate folks have tons of energy and tend to be hot-tempered. If this sounds like you, you might want to try eating more cooling foods such as fruits and veggies. Mint and dill are great for cooling down the body, as is skim milk. By avoiding spicy food, oil, and caffeine, you’ll really be doing your body a favor.
People with a vata body type are never found standing still! They’re always on the run and ready to pick up everything at a moment’s notice. These flexible people are generally very creative and intelligent. Unlike pita, vata types crave warmth. Warming spices such as ginger, garlic, and onion can really work wonders in these cases. Cooked grains like oatmeal and basmati rice are also very soothing.
People who are ruled by a kapha body type have a very strong constitution. They have strength and stamina and generally make great athletes. At the same time, they exhibit a calmness and focus that is sometimes lacking in the other two body types. Since these bodies are characterized by “heaviness”, kaphas should avoid excessive protein and stick to lighter products like tofu and chicken. They should should avoid excessive animal protein and make sure to have plenty of vegetables and light, crispy foods in their diet. It all comes down to getting in touch with your body.
